When most guys think about proposing to their girlfriend they immediately start ring shopping. Grooms-to-be enlist the advice and aid of friends and family to get a crash course in diamond clarity, diamond cut and ring settings.

If you've never bought a diamond ring, the experience can be overwhelming. In addition to finding a reputable jeweler, a certain amount of research goes into the purchase of an engagement ring or wedding ring.

One thing guys should keep in mind when they are buying a ring to propose is that your girlfriend and fiance-to-be has likely been dreaming of what her ring looks like forever. While we gals won't admit it to you, we have looked at engagement rings since we were young. We clip them out of magazines, we make note when we see a celebrity's ring we like, we create them in our heads of what we want our ultimate wedding ring to look like.

I'm sure this comes as no surprise, but the significance of this for the guy is paramount. Your girlfriend may love you and adore you and want to marry you, but if you propose to her with a ring that is not what she imagined, she might be a wee bit disappointed.

The message for men here is that in addition to asking your mom, your dad, your bromantic buddy and your boss about their ring opinions, make a concerted effort to learn if your bride-to-be has any strong feelings about the engagement ring she hopes to receive someday.

You can ask her yourself, or you can ask her dearest friends and relatives. Chances are you'll get lots of good direction and you'll be able to proceed with your wedding ring shopping in confidence and without wasting your time looking at rings and settings she doesn't like.
